Five Factors To Consider When Choosing Pool Coping

There are many factors to consider when choosing coping for your pool.  Each type of pool coping has different features. By knowing these features, you can choose the coping that is right for you.

Five Factors To Consider When Choosing Pool Coping

Here are five things to think about when choosing pool coping:

Price

There are two things to consider: the upfront cost and how long the coping will last.  While concrete pool coping is usually the cheapest option, it may not last as long as natural stone or other types of pool coping.

Look

Each type of pool coping provides a different look.  Some people prefer the smooth and unbroken look of concrete around a pool.  Others like the look of natural stone or bricks.

Heat retention

The amount of heat absorbed by your pool’s coping is important.  The more heat your pool coping absorbs, the hotter it will get.  If your coping gets too hot, it can be uncomfortable on your bare feet.

Generally, lighter colored natural stone and brick will absorb less heat.  However, each type of material is different, so it’s a good idea to check before you choose a material.

Maintenance and repair

All types of pool coping will need regular maintenance and repair.  However, each material has different needs.

For example, certain types of stones or bricks may need to use more grout to keep them together.  This grout may be more prone to cracking and can stain.  In contrast, concrete doesn’t need grout but may crack in extreme temperatures.  Natural stones have different maintenance needs because they need to be swept more to avoid staining from dead leaves and other debris.

Safety

Another thing to consider is how slip-resistant your pool coping may be.  Some materials are less slippery than others.
